Former labor leader and main protagonist. After his family flees Karachi during partition and their home is usurped by his uncle Ponnambalam, he returns to reclaim their property. He is repeatedly targeted by the antagonist's associates, falsely arrested, and ultimately imprisoned for murder. While in jail, he narrates his family's ordeal to his cellmates.
