Chicago's former boxing champion forced out of retirement by financial ruin. Accepts a bout against champion Steve Bronski after receiving backing from gangster Tony Russo. Wins the fight but suffers severe injuries and is nearly murdered by Russo's men. Loses his fiancée Helene and becomes engaged to her sister, Jane.
