The letter's author and narrator. She was a childhood neighbor who developed a lifelong infatuation with the writer. Years later she becomes a university student and later a dance hostess to raise her son. She has multiple brief liaisons with him, though he repeatedly fails to recognize her. After her son's death, she writes the letter before her own death.
