A French Foreign Legion private who returns to Mogador and becomes entangled with nightclub singer Amy Jolly. After rejecting the advances of Adjutant Caesar's wife and surviving an assassination attempt, Tom is punished and reassigned to a dangerous post. He initially plans to desert with Amy but changes his mind. Later faking an injury to avoid combat, he is transferred to a new unit. Ultimately, Amy follows him into the desert as he marches away.
