A lonely department store returns desk worker and boarding house tenant. She intervenes to stop Terry's suicide attempt, manages his finances, and guides him to employment. After being fired for flirting, she initially rejects his proposal to help his career. Deceived by a jealous rival, she leaves Terry for a wealthy widow's job but eventually reconciles with him after discovering the deception. They elope, escape jail, and are promised a formal wedding.
