The protagonist and daughter of Major Sellar. Raised believing she had no mother, she is initially engaged to James Paton. She defies her father's refusal to attend Queen Victoria's visit in Edinburgh, where she visits Lt. Forsyth. After discovering Madame Marly is her estranged mother and the family reconciles, she leaves Paton for Forsyth.
