The central protagonist. Initially a brigadier general, he is appointed Defence Minister during the Battle of France. After facing political opposition, he travels to Britain to meet Churchill, secures support for evacuating troops to North Africa, and later issues a famous radio appeal to the French people. He ultimately becomes the leader of the Free French movement and eventually President of the Republic.
