The protagonist captured by Portuguese settlers and later by the Tupinambá. He attempts to prove his French identity by reciting poetry, adopts tribal customs, gathers cannon powder to help his captors win a battle, attempts to escape with his Tupinambá wife, is shot and ritually executed, and prophesies the tribe's extinction.
