A handsome and charming young man who courted Catherine at a cousin's engagement party. He proposes marriage but is suspected by Dr. Sloper of being a fortune hunter. He later openly admits his mercenary motives when Catherine refuses to elope, backs out, and reappears years later only to be firmly rejected by the now-independent and uninterested Catherine.
