The Crompton matriarch who manages the household budget. She attempts to help a neighbor financially, later pawns her husband's expensive overcoat to support her pregnant daughter Hilda. Fearing her husband's anger, she runs into the rain and contemplates suicide, but is comforted by Rafe. She eventually regains his trust by being given the bureau key.
