American war correspondent for The New Republic who returns to Berlin in June 1945. He investigates his murdered driver's death, searches for his former lover Lena Brandt, and becomes entangled in a conspiracy involving missing SS officer Emil Brandt. Ultimately, he trades Brandt's incriminating notebooks to US authorities in exchange for Lena's denazification document and exit visa.
