A struggling priest and aspiring poet in rural Bengal. He leaves his family to seek employment in the city, promising to return with money. His prolonged absence deepens the family's poverty. Upon his return, he discovers his daughter Durga has died, leading him to guide the remaining family members to leave their ancestral home for Benaras.
