A debut novelist who falls in love with receptionist Ann Halpern. After a romantic stay in Scotland, he returns to London to work as a copywriter. He proposes to Ann but is devastated when she refuses marriage and secretly has an abortion. He eventually breaks into an office with Stephen to steal a typewriter to resume his writing career.
