20-year-old Dutch soldier sent to the Indonesian National Revolution. Initially idealistic, he witnesses war crimes and is radicalized by Captain Westerling. He participates in torture and killings, hardening into a ruthless fighter. After questioning the war and being declared an outlaw, he kills a fellow soldier and escapes. Years later, he returns to the Netherlands, kills Westerling in a theater, and commits suicide.
