Lee's manipulative mother who feigns fainting spells while secretly smoking and gambling. She orchestrates efforts to keep Alvah and Lee apart so their marriage can be legally annulled, hoping to marry Lee off to the wealthy Herman Strouple instead. She also conspires with others to have Alvah declared mentally ill.
