A Catholic Italian-American young man in New York City. He meets a local girl on the Staten Island Ferry and plans to marry her, initially refusing sex to preserve her virginity. After she reveals a past rape, he is devastated, rejects her, and tries to return to drinking. Later, he returns to her apartment, awkwardly offers forgiveness and marriage, but becomes enraged when she questions his attachment to her past. He insults her, then recants, leaving confused and finding no solace in church.
