Known as Popi, he is the hardworking father of Luis and Junior and boyfriend of Lupe. He works three jobs to support his family and plans to marry Lupe. Desperate to give his sons a better life, he steals a boat and attempts to send them to Miami Beach disguised as Cuban refugees. After their rescue and hospitalization, he sneaks in to convince them to stay but exposes his own scheme when he argues with them in English.
