A German-born New York brewer who initially opposes US involvement in WWI. He is deceived by the saboteur Anton Miller into donating $50,000. After learning his son joined the army and believing he was killed in a sabotaged ship sinking, Karl initially seeks revenge. He later allies with Henry Block to expose Miller as a saboteur, ultimately abandoning his political isolationism to embrace patriotism and family.
