Former train robber and the story's protagonist. Fleeing to California, he arrives in Wyoming, steals a horse, and eventually takes in the orphaned Kincaid children after their father is killed. He kills a corrupt mayor's henchman, gets arrested, escapes, allies with ranchers, and ultimately murders the mayor John Buckley. He finally chooses to settle in Wyoming with Mehitabel.
