A bored British WWII naval officer who fakes a defection to the Soviet Union to prove to Virginia Killain that acquiring money is easy. His elaborate hoax backfires when he becomes genuinely stranded, but he eventually engineers a rescue, outsmarts authorities through quick thinking, and wins Virginia's affection by pivoting to selling his true survival story to the press.
