Austrian notary arrested by the Gestapo following the Anschluss. He survives months of isolation by mentally replaying a stolen chess book, eventually suffers a mental breakdown, and escapes under the alias Max van Leuwen. He travels to America plagued by hallucinations, wins a high-stakes match against world champion Mirko Czentovic, and ends up in a psychiatric clinic.
