The protagonist, an 18-year-old boy in 1982 West Germany who works for a peace movement to court Britta. He studies literature and politics, engages in numerous short-term relationships, and remains obsessed with finding Britta. After learning the truth about her in 1989, his personal life unravels alongside his parents' divorce. By 1998, he attempts to settle down but makes one final trip to Berlin to see her.
