The protagonist, a widowed doctor who settles in Westport after WWI. He adopts Jean, generously treats townsfolk, and tirelessly campaigns for a hospital. Despite being blacklisted by George Sykes and suspended for warning about a polio outbreak, his public health efforts are ultimately vindicated. He dies peacefully after reconciling with his son and earning community respect.
