A painter who uses one of his Brooklyn apartment rooms as a studio. Initially reluctant to spend $10,000 on his dog Dorothy's surgery, he later agrees with his wife Ruth to save her. After a Manhattan apartment deal falls through due to the sellers' attitude, he refuses to write a deposit check and leaves the apartment with Ruth. At the end, he walks Dorothy upstairs as a young couple moves into their building.
