A young hitchhiker traveling to Plainfield who changes a woman's tire for a ride. He carries a decorated military uniform and claims a medical discharge. Initially suspected of desertion, he works as a chauffeur for the Hammond family. He is later revealed to be a nationally recognized war hero who dislikes publicity and decides to settle in Plainfield after a fallen comrade bequeathed it to him.
