An American-born man who travels to Old Delhi with his dying grandmother. He gradually immerses himself in the local culture, empathizes with community conflicts, and falls in love with Bittu. He intervenes in her arranged marriage, dons a monkey suit to stop her elopement, gets shot by locals mistaken for the Kala Bandar, survives a spiritual awakening, and ultimately decides to make Delhi 6 his permanent home.
