One of the two central protagonists. He reunites with his childhood friend Gijs after forty years. Historically, he aided Gijs's desertion partly to pursue a shared romantic interest. Now a widower, he has a daughter and granddaughter. He falls in love with Zwaantje, marries her after Gijs, and eventually inherits from his friend, embarking on a cruise with her.
