Wife of Augusto and mother of Mario. She visits her husband in prison, attempting to persuade him to seek papal pardon. Struggling to provide for her son, she eventually agrees to send Mario to a seminary at Don Aldo's suggestion. She seeks out former patriot acquaintances to revive revolutionary ideals but finds them resigned to the status quo. Upon the Piedmontese entry into Rome, she rushes to the prison to free Augusto, only to witness his death in her arms during the long-awaited liberation.
