Protagonist and dial painter at American Radium. Falls in love with photographer Walt, who introduces her to political activism. After her sister Jo falls ill from radium poisoning, Bessie leads the fight against the company, seeks legal and medical help, and pushes for a trial. Though reluctant about the settlement, she ultimately signs to secure justice for the other girls.
