Orphaned at two, he is raised by his grandfather in a small Belgian village. Despite poverty and illiteracy, he possesses exceptional artistic talent and dreams of becoming a painter. He shares a deep bond with his dog Patrasche and his friend Alois. After losing his home, he returns a large sum of money to his former enemy, ultimately freezing to death alongside Patrasche in front of Rubens' masterpieces.
