He returns to Pittsburgh, rejects his father's expectation to run the family baby food factory, and briefly cohabitates with Lynn. After losing his job due to resentment toward the military, he eventually reconciles with his father, embraces traditional values, and sends a nostalgic balloon package to Lynn.
