Demobilized war hero and officer who returns home full of idealism to better the world. He loves Mary Leighton, who nursed him during the war. Despite a bungled proposal, they plan to marry. He repeatedly attempts to foster goodwill and reconciliation among his hostile relatives and neighbors, but fails. Ultimately, he accepts their preference for the status quo, moves into a flat with Mary, and concludes the film by proudly playing his trumpet loudly, indifferent to public opinion.
