A young man in 19th-century Yogyakarta and son of the local mosque imam. Dissatisfied with the syncretism of Islam and Javanese animistic mysticism, he travels to Mecca for the hajj, where he spends five years studying what he considers the true form of Islam before returning to reform his community.
