The protagonist, a young girl growing up in 1950s South Carolina born out of wedlock. She endures severe physical and sexual abuse from her stepfather Glen, suffers fractured bones and trauma, but ultimately finds safety and emotional freedom with her aunts after her mother's repeated failures to protect her.
