A wealthy former peddler turned garment factory owner who exerts a paternalistic and domineering control over his Jewish immigrant employees. He becomes infatuated with and marries a young employee's daughter, Masha, but ultimately grants her a divorce when she becomes unhappy. In his later years, he grows frail and lonely, spending his time reminiscing and singing with former workers.
