An adjutant and former French Resistance fighter who takes the inexperienced Cariou under his wing. As the Indochina War escalates, Tual transforms into a hardened commander leading punitive expeditions against Viet Minh forces. Upon discovering that a notorious French deserter praised in enemy propaganda is actually his former friend Cariou, he embarks on a personal quest to find him.
