A musicology professor denied a university promotion who visits her sister in Appalachia. She discovers traditional ballads, records them, and forms a romantic relationship with Tom. After a fire destroys her work, she undergoes a personal transformation regarding the mountain community and her sister's sexuality, ultimately leaving to share the music with the outside world.
