A petty criminal and pickpocket who anonymously saves crash survivors but cannot claim the reward due to his arrest. After his homeless acquaintance John Bubber falsely claims the honor, Bernie tries to expose him but fails. He later conspires with John to maintain the public hero persona, negotiates a payout for his son's tuition, and ultimately reveals the truth to his son, ending with a selfless rescue at a zoo.
