Protagonist and an amoral master swordsman. He kills a praying pilgrim, murders a fencing opponent after coercing his wife, joins the Shinsengumi assassins, kills his own mistress who attempts to murder him, and eventually descends into madness after hallucinating the ghosts of his victims, ending in a frozen mid-slash.
