A school friend who enlists with Paul. He is severely wounded in combat and later dies in an overcrowded military hospital. His painful and lonely death deeply unsettles Paul and serves as an early, grim illustration of the medical horrors faced by wounded soldiers. Paul later falsely comforts his grieving mother.
