The anti-hero and protagonist. A competent, merit-promoted officer from the Indian Presidency armies who despises the aristocratic, incompetent British command. Serves as Lord Raglan's aide, flees a guilt-ridden affair, and is fatally killed during the disastrous charge at Balaclava after his frustrated gesture misdirects the cavalry order.
