A local drug dealer and numbers racket participant who wins a large bonus number bet. When Nate cannot pay, Melvin is forced into the business but later feels cheated. He identifies Ben at a concert, kidnaps him and his friends for ransom, and ultimately forces Nate to acknowledge Ben's interracial relationship after paying the debt.
