An archaeologist and university professor obsessed with ancient Egypt. He discovers Queen Kara's tomb in 1961, neglects his wife Anne for his assistant Jane, and later transports the mummy and Canopic jars to England. Believing Kara's spirit possesses his daughter, he attempts a resurrection ritual to save her but is ultimately tricked and killed by the fully reincarnated queen.
Matthew serves as Jane's legal husband following their initial archaeological partnership.
