The protagonist, an American playwright who becomes a Nazi propaganda broadcaster and covert U.S. spy. After the war, he lives in anonymity in New York, haunted by his past and the revelation that his wartime actions have made him a pariah. He eventually turns himself in to Israeli authorities and commits suicide in jail, citing crimes against himself.
