A widowed single mother in 1955 caring for her two sons. After accidentally hitting Jack McCloud with her car, she compassionately invites him in to recover. She struggles with her growing attachment to Jack and the family's reluctance to let him go, while navigating community jealousy and her own emotional burdens as a solo parent.
