A poor but principled lawyer whom Lily deeply admires and loves. Though Lily discovers he was once Bertha Dorset's lover, she keeps the scandalous letters secret. He initially distances himself from Lily due to her social struggles, but ultimately rushes to her bedside after finding her partially burned letters, weeping and declaring his love as she dies.
