A French diplomat exiled to Calcutta as punishment for shooting leprosy patients and attempting suicide. Inexperienced with women, he becomes intensely infatuated with Anne-Marie, passionately confessing his love and begging to stay overnight. After being rejected and removed, he follows her to the delta islands before resigning.
