A 1998 antique restorer who discovers a 19th-century love letter in a desk. Guided by his spiritualist mother, he initiates a time-spanning correspondence with Elizabeth Whitcomb. His attempts to alter history to save her lover lead to a post office fire, severing contact. He eventually accepts the cyclical nature of their love, ends his engagement to Debra, and fulfills Elizabeth's wish by publishing her poetry collection.
