Mary's half-brother and leader of the Scottish noblemen. Initially questioning her religious devotion, he allies with Elizabeth to plot against her. He kidnaps baby James, leads rebel troops against Holyrood Castle, and ultimately forces Mary to abdicate, imprisoning her and appointing himself regent.
