The central narrator and protagonist of the tragedy. She marries wealthy vintner Paul Hochen but secretly cheats on him with rodeo rider San Sanders. Attempting to murder Paul by staging a burglary, she accidentally kills his best friend instead. She manipulates Paul into confessing and frames him for the crime. Later falsely blamed for her mother-in-law's poisoning, she is convicted and sentenced to execution in the gas chamber.
